Description
Popular tradition says that in the 10th century, during the Norman invasions, a priest hid in a hollow tree trunk with a wooden statue of the Madonna and child in order to avoid the looting. Two centuries later, a shepherdess would have found this Virgin and Child in the same trunk, where the church stands today. This story even gave it its name, "Our Lady of Tronchaye". Indeed, the term "Tronchaye" comes from the word "trunk". This legend explains the offset location of the church from the city center and on a steep slope.
