Description
Nestled off the Brand Highway, 25 kilometres south of Geraldton, is a slice of history stood still in time. The Central Greenough Historical Settlement is wonderfully preserved and as you take a stroll through the buildings you also stroll through the history pages of the Midwest region.
Settled in the early 1860's the Hamlet, as it's commonly known, was built as a service centre for the thriving farming community, housing the essential services of a school, jail, churches (both Catholic and Anglican), convent and a local store. Almost 150 years later 11 of the original buildings are still standing and are preserved by the National Trust.
Construction of the original St Peter's Church was started in 1864, but wasn’t completed until 1867. It was badly damaged by the 1888 flood and was replaced in 1909 by a more substantial building erected next to the Greenough Convent, also called St Peter's.
