Description
Hokitika is a town in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island, 40 kilometres south of Greymouth, and close to the mouth of the Hokitika River. It is the seat and largest town in the Westland District.
The Hokitika Clock Tower, initially called the Westland War Memorial and then the Coronation and War Memorial, is a prominent landmark in Hokitika, New Zealand
It was erected in 1903 as a tribute to the 103 Westland men who fought in the Second Boer War (1899 – 1902) in South Africa and as a memorial to the four soldiers who died. The landmark also recognized the coronation of Edward VII. He reigned as King of the United Kingdom from 1901 until 1910.
